Locker Location, Access, and Paths

How do I request a WolfWare locker?

Request a WolfWare course locker at the following URL:

https://wolfware.ncsu.edu/wrap-bin/admintool?task=rnl

or by selecting the Add Your Course to WolfWare link at http://wolfware.ncsu.edu/. Login is required (use your Unity ID and password), and only instructors known to Registration and Records can request lockers. Enter the course information and select Go! On the locker-request page that appears, select the Add box beside the section(s) you are teaching. Finally, select the Submit New Course button at the bottom of the page to send your request to the system.

The approval process for a locker request usually takes one business day to complete. Once the request is processed, you will receive an email containing the course URL and instructions for using the locker. From that point on, the locker is refreshed daily with PackTracks and Registration and Records data, which keeps class rolls, course mailing lists, and other WolfWare-generated resources current.

Instructors must reapply for a course locker each semester! However, because all course lockers are archived at the end of each semester and stored for two years, it is easy for the instructor to mount a previous semester's content into new locker space via WolfWare Toolbox -> Select Course -> Restore Parked Locker.

I am an instructor, but I am not able to request a WolfWare locker for my course. The course shows "Staff" and not my name.

The ownership of this course is in question. Please use your ACS account to change ownership of the listed course within the Registration and Records database. Within ACS, you will need to go to the Departmental Course Section Inquiry/Update page and change ownership of the course.

If you do not have ACS access, pass this request to your departmental scheduling officer, who should have the required access. WolfWare relies on the data from R&R to be accurate, and these changes cannot be made from within the WolfWare environment.

What is the course URL and the corresponding location of the course locker in AFS file space, including write permissions to the space?

For a WolfWare course:

http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/
e.g. -> http://courses.ncsu.edu/csc200/
/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/www/
e.g. ->/afs/eos/courses/csc/csc200/www/

A boilerplate home page (index.html), which lists all course lecture and lab sections, is automatically created in this directory. Individual users cannot change the boilerplate page except through the web tools at Faculty Links: WolfWare Toolbox -> Edit WWW Boilerplate. Add links or text in the prescribed areas. Return to the Toolbox and select Request Boilerplate Update to apply the changes sooner (15 min) than the daily system update (24 hours).

For common web materials shared by all sections of a course:

http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/common/
e.g. -> http://courses.ncsu.edu/csc200/common/
/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/common/www/
e.g. ->/afs/eos/courses/csc/csc200/common/www/

All course instructors (and support people they assign) may write in this file space and create a common home page (index.html) and web materials for the course.

For an individual lecture or lab section of a course:

Lecture:
http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/
e.g. -> http://courses.ncsu.edu/csc200/lec/001/
/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/www/
e.g. -> /afs/eos/courses/csc/csc200/lec/001/www/

Lab:
http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/lab/zzz/
e.g. -> http://courses.ncsu.edu/csc200/lab/001/
/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lab/zzz/www/
e.g. ->/afs/eos/courses/csc/csc200/lab/001/www/

Only the section instructor (and support people s/he assigns) may write in this space and create a home page (index.html) and web materials for the individual section.

For WRAP-protected web space for individual sections where access to materials can be restricted:

Lecture:
http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/wrap/
e.g. -> http://courses.ncsu.edu/csc200/lec/001/wrap/
/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/www/wrap/
e.g. -> /afs/eos/courses/csc/csc200/lec/001/www/wrap/

Lab:
http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/lab/zzz/wrap/
e.g. -> http://courses.ncsu.edu/csc200/lab/001/wrap/
/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lab/zzz/www/wrap/
e.g. ->/afs/eos/courses/csc/csc200/lab/001/www/wrap/

Only the section instructor (and support people s/he assigns) may read and write in this space. However, the space can be opened for viewing by the section, selected sections, all course sections, or all NCSU. Read access can also be given to individuals with realm IDs.

Why aren't the AFS and URL paths the same (following /afs/eos/courses/ and http://courses.ncsu.edu/)?

There is not a one-to-one correspondence between the AFS and URL paths because of shortcuts (symbolic links) created to keep the course URLs as short as possible.

Who can read and write in the course locker?

In AFS, permissions are set on directories (folders), not individual files (rl=read, rlidwk=write, rlidwka=administer). The following are the default settings for the course and section lockers' /www directories.

Course: /afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/www/ (world read, sysadmin write, edit by instructors and support staff via WolfWare Toolbox->Edit WWW Boilerplate)

Common: /afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/common/www/ (world read, course instructors and support staffs write)

Section (both lab and lecture): /afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/www/ (world read, section instructor and support staff write)

Section WRAP-protected directory (both lab and lecture): /afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/www/wrap/ (support staff read and write) Can be altered via WolfWare Toolbox ->Configure WRAP Access to open read access to all NCSU, all course, selected sections, or one section only. Additional individual users with realm IDs can also be given read access.

Where is the "common" area of the WolfWare course locker and what is it for (e.g., http://courses.ncsu.edu/e115/common/ )?

Web materials shared by all sections and instructors of a course are accessed as:

http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/common/
e.g.,
http://courses.ncsu.edu/csc200/common/

The materials reside in:

/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/common/www/
e.g.,
/afs/eos/courses/csc/csc200/common/www/

All course instructors (and support people they assign) may write in this file space and create a common home page (index.html) and web materials for the course. The contents in this space are left across semesters, so it is a good place to place persistent course content.

Shared media files should be placed in

/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/common/www/media/

URL: http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/common/media/

Locker Quota Check on the Admin Tools page allows the instructor to monitor common and common/media space and to request more quota if needed. Although automatic warning messages are sent out if the section quota is filling, no messages are sent on common and media quotas.

No wrap directory is automatically created in common/www/ as it is in section lockers.

To link to the common area of the course locker as the section home page, select WolfWare Toolbox -> Edit WWW Boilerplate. Select the radio button beside Link to another section and select "common" from the pull-down list. The Home Page link for your section on the boilerplate page, when updated, will link to the course home page at http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/common/.

Where do I put material that can be accessed across semesters, even if the course is not currently being taught?

WolfWare was designed with three states of a course in mind: in preparation (PREP), current, and in archive (PARK). However, it is possible for content to remain available even if the course is not currently being taught. That content should reside in the course "common" area:

http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/common/
e.g.,
http://courses.ncsu.edu/csc200/common/

The location in AFS for these materials is:

/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/common/www/
e.g.,
/afs/eos/courses/csc/csc200/common/www/

All course instructors (and support people they assign) may write in this file space and create a common home page (index.html) and web materials for the course. Shared media files should be placed in:

/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/common/www/media/
URL:
http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/common/media/

If the course is multi-section with many instructors, there may be problems sharing the space. We recommend that these instructors create subdirectories under their names, e.g.,

/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/common/www/instructor/
URL:
http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/common/instructor/

Locker Quota Check on the Admin Tools page allows the instructor to monitor common and common/media space and to request more quota if needed. Although automatic warning messages are sent out if the section quota is filling, no messages are sent on common and media quotas.

Also, there is no wrap subdirectory in common/www/ as there is for a section locker.

Where do students access WolfWare courses and content?

Students access the locker contents and tools through the Links column of the course boilerplate page (http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/). At this time, there are five links possible: Home Page, Message Board, Submit Assignments, Retrieve Assignments, and Grade Book.. If the student needs to access the Home Page, post to the Message Board, Submit/Retrieve Assignments, or get Grades, s/he locates his/her class in the Course - Section column and then selects the appropriate link from the Links column.

Can I "attach" course lockers as I do other directories on Unix?

Yes. Just attach locker. This allows you to change into that directory with the shorter /ncsu path reference, e.g.,

attach csc200
cd
/ncsu/csc200

rather than the absolute path, cd /afs/eos/courses/csc/csc200/. You can check to see if you are in the correct directory with the pwd command (path of working directory).

pwd
/afs/eos.ncsu.edu/courses/csc/csc200/

Putting Content into the Course Locker

How do I put content into the locker if I am not on an Eos/Unity computer with direct access to AFS file space?

You will need to use a File Transfer Protocol (ftp) application to connect to your Wolfware course space in AFS (see path locations above). The following links will help you make a connection to campus computers and AFS from your home or office computer.

General ftp information:

http://www.ncsu.edu/it/essentials/managing_files/file_transfer/

Secure file transfer:

http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/remoteaccess/#scp

Using Dreamweaver ftp:

http://lts.ncsu.edu/resources/workshop_materials/dwmx2/DW2_handout_20040927.pdf

Using Smartftp:

http://wolfware.ncsu.edu/pubs/smartftp.html

How do I put files into the course locker if I have access to AFS space (e.g., as on the student lab machines)?

On a Windows computer connected to AFS, you can simply save to your Wolfware course space in AFS just as you would to your K: drive (mapped to your home directory) or your local C: drive. Your system is usually set up to save to either K: or C: by default, so you would need to select Save As... and select the J: drive (/afs), eos or eos.ncsu.edu, and follow the path to your course locker (see path locations above). On Unix and Linux, you also save directly to your Wolfware course directory, /afs/eos/courses/ ....

How do I create links between files in my course locker?

Put them in the same directory and link to them with relative links, that is, provide the file name rather than the whole URL. For example, if you have two files in your www directory named index.html and syllabus.html, link from index.html to syllabus.html with A HREF="syllabus.html" rather than A HREF="http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/syllabus.html".

The relative link is faster and more portable than the absolute URL since you are referring to files descending from the root of your locker's www space. If you ever move your web site to another directory or server, the links will still work.

For example, if you teach section 002 one semester and make all your links with the absolute URL http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/lec/002/, then teach section 003 the next semester, your links will break and have to be changed to 003. If you use relative linking from the www level down, changes to the top levels of the web address will not affect your content and links. You can also create subdirectories and link to them as A HREF="subdir/syllabus.html".

Important note: If you move a whole web site from one place to another and find that the links don't work, check the page "source" code for a "BASE HREF" tag at the top of the file pointing to the former URL. If there is one, remove this line of code with an editor.

Where do I place audio, video, and other media files in my course locker?

The directory set up by WolfWare to hold media is in the course locker, not the section locker, i.e., /afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/common/www/media/. The URL is http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/common/media/file.au. The intent is that media files (often large) should be shared among sections when possible.

However, if you are using special realmedia services, such as streaming audio or video, you need a special URL to access them,

http://realaudio.ncsu.edu/ramgen/wolfware/xxxyyy/common/media/file.rm
e.g.,
http://realaudio.ncsu.edu/ramgen/wolfware/csc114/common/media/file.rm

A video (or audio) file in the wrap directory of my WolfWare locker will not play. What is happening?

(See information on the wrap directory, http://wolfware.ncsu.edu/faq/#restrict and http://wolfware.ncsu.edu/faq/#admintools.)

The common/www/media area of the course locker is where WolfWare intends for media files to be held. However, you can put them in your section locker, but you cannot "wrap" them. Most video and audio players open a connection to the URL directly rather than having the browser download the file for them. Since the video/audio player does not have your WRAP cookie, and it cannot get one, it is impossible for it to download the files.

Put audio and video files in common/www/media or your section locker location, but do not let people find them unless they follow a link from a wrapped page. For example, if your course is CSC200-001, place your video and audio files in your section locker: /afs/eos/courses/csc/csc200/lec/001/www/

Then in the 001/www/wrap/ directory, create a web page that has links to the media files in the 001/www directory. Use the following URL for your links:

http://realaudio.ncsu.edu/ramgen/wolfware/csc200/001/filename.rm

How do I use server technologies, such as CGI and server-side includes (SSI)?

WolfWare does not support CGI or SSI due to possible security holes that could be exploited via those mechanisms to gain access to other students'
homework or private information handled by those servers. There is no current mechanism to prevent server-run scripts from accessing other protected data which is accessed by the servers that provide content from WolfWare. If we can find such a mechanism, we will certainly include dynamic content in the future, but until then, it isn't possible for us to provide this functionality.

I am having problems putting content into the locker and/or displaying it? Why can't I do this?

Try troubleshooting the following:

  1. Are you the instructor of record and have permissions to write to the space?
  2. If you are not the instructor of record, you will need to be added to the Support LIst for the section before you can access the space. The instructor must go to courses.ncsu.edu web site, select the WolfWare Toolbox link, log in and select course/section, then select the Manage Support List button, and add your userid to the list. If you should be the instructor of record, contact Registration and Records.
  3. If you are using a browser to upload files, make sure it is a fairly new update, 4.0 or better for Netscape and Internet Explorer.
  4. Make sure you are placing all web content into the /www directory of the common or section file space, e.g., /afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/www/ or /afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxyyyy/common/www/ Other directories in your locker are not writable.
  5. Do you have ample quota? Check Wolfware Toolbox -> Locker Quota Check.
  6. If you move a whole web site from one place to another and find that the links don't work, check the page "source" code for a "BASE HREF" tag at the top of the file pointing to the former URL. If there is one, remove this line of code with an editor.

If the problem persists, report it to help@wolfware.ncsu.edu. Include as much information as you can about what you are doing. Include

  • your realm ID
  • the course/section
  • error messages
  • the time/date of the attempt
  • how you tried to copy (ftp, copy directly in AFS, type of computer, browser, if you have been successful before, etc.)

Faculty Links: WolfWare Toolbox

As a course instructor, where do I find the tools to administer my locker?

Instructors develop their course lockers through web-based tools in the WolfWare Toolbox, available from Faculty Links on the boilerplate course home page (also on the http://courses.ncsu.edu/ page). There is no need for the instructor to work from the command line. (Student access to Wolfware is from the boilerplate page only, not the WolfWare Toolbox.)

Authenticate to the secure site using your Eos/Unity ID and password and select the course and section you want to administer from the pull-down list.

What tools are available to the instructor?

By selecting Faculty Links: WolfWare Toolbox from the course home page and authenticating to the specific section you teach, you will access the Admin Tools page that contains all WolfWare tools that are ready for use. All are web-based, so command-line manipulation is neither necessary nor recommended. (A Faculty Link is also provided to Reg & Rec for the excellent tools they provide.)

User Management

View Class Roll: Includes full name, Eos/Unity ID, preferred email address of all currently enrolled students. Roll is alphabetized by last name.

Manage Support List: Lists the support personnel (e.g., TAs) for the class. Add support people by typing their Eos/Unity IDs in the field at the bottom and selecting the Add to Support button. To remove, select the check box at the left of the user's name and the Remove from Support button. IMPORTANT! People added to this list have exactly the same access rights to the locker's directories and Toolbox Admin Tools as the instructor.

Manage Extras List: Lists "Extras," or people who do not yet (or may never) appear on the roll, e.g., audits, late adds, incompletes, distance learners, etc. An extra must have an Eos/Unity ID in order to be added; type it in the field at the bottom of the page and select Add to Extras List. Once added, extras have full student access and will receive class mail. To remove, select the check box at the left of the user's name and the Remove from Extras button.

Configure User: Type a user ID in the field provided and get user information, and/or add the user to the extras or support list.

Change Locker Owner: Requests Reg&Rec to change locker ownership to someone else on the Support List.

Webpage Management

Edit WWW Boilerplate: Allows instructor to change home page and message board links on the course boilerplate page (http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/). Links can be pointed to other section home pages, to the common course home page (http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/common/), or to another URL. Can also add extra course description info to the boilerplate, e.g., for special topics courses, new courses that do not yet appear in the course catalog, etc.

Request Boilerplate Update: Applies the Edit WWW Boilerplate changes in ~15 min. rather than during the daily system update.

Configure WRAP Access: Allows instructor to set access to materials placed in the section's /afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/www/wrap/ directory (URL: http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/lec/001/wrap/), e.g., copyrighted materials, unpublished research, etc. Options include all NCSU, course only, section only, combination of sections, or support people only (default). Individuals can also be granted access by adding their user IDs in the field provided.

Filespace Management

Locker Quota Check: Allows instructor to monitor quota for the section (/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/), course (/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/common/), and course media (/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/common/www/media/), and to request more quota and warning messages. Automatic warning messages are sent out if the section quota is filling; no messages are sent on common and media quotas.

Restore Parked Locker: Allows instructor to request that a previous semester's class www directory be copied from archived space to a current www directory..

Mailing List Management

Set Mailing List Access: Allows instructor to determine who receives mail from the class mailing list (xxxyyy-zzz@wolfware.ncsu.edu): support staff, all section students and support staff, or world (latter not recommended but sometimes needed).

Other Tools

Message Board Admin: Set up and administer class discussion forums.

Submit Admin: Set up and administer secure assignment submission to the locker (/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/submitted/)

Electronic Reserves: Set up e-reserves for your section through NCSU Libraries (under construction).

How do I change my WolfWare home page link to point to another URL or the course's "common" area?

Go to http://courses.ncsu.edu/ and select the WolfWare Toolbox link. Select your section and then Edit WWW Boilerplate. The default is set to Link to my www area.

To link to the common area of the course locker, select the radio button beside Link to another section and select "common" from the pull-down list. The Home Page link for your section on the boilerplate page, when updated, will link to the course home page at http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/common/ (/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/common/www/) rather than to http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/ (/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/www/). To link to another section, select that section from the pull-down list.

To link to another URL altogether, select the Link to another URL: and type in the whole URL, including the http:// part.

If you wish the changes to take place within 15 minutes rather than during the regular system update, return to the WolfWare Toolbox Admin tools (http://wolfware.ncsu.edu/wrap-bin/admintool) and select Request Boilerplate Update.

How do I give my TA access to my WolfWare course locker?

The instructor of record for the course selects the WolfWare Toolbox link at http://courses.ncsu.edu/ and authenticates to the specific section of the course s/he wants to administer. On the Admin Tools menu page that appears, the instructor selects the Manage Support List link to see the support personnel for the class, which is usually just the instructor. To add someone to this list, the instructor types the Eos/Unity ID of the TA in the Add to Support List field and then selects the Add to Support button.

IMPORTANT! People added to this list have exactly the same access rights to the section locker's directories and Admin Tools as the instructor. Support access is all or none.

To remove people from the support list, select the check box at the left of the user's name and the Remove from Support button.

How do I change course catalog information, prerequisites, instructor listing, etc., on the course boilerplate page?

Content on WolfWare boilerplate pages cannot be changed except through ACS. Contact ACS and have them update their database with the correct information. WolfWare creates the boilerplate from database feeds from ACS. However, you can make some changes to the boilerplate via WolfWare Toolbox -> Edit WWW Boilerplate. In the field provided, you can add additional information to the Course Catalog Description, and you can also set the Home Page and Message Board to link to other sites.

How do I restrict access to my WolfWare course to the students in the class only?

A WolfWare course is viewable by anyone in the world unless changed by the instructor. If you wish to restrict access to materials, e.g., unpublished research, copyrighted materials, or the full course, place them in the wrap directory of your section's web space, /afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/www/wrap/ (URL: http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/wrap/).

Use Wolfware Toolbox -> Configure WRAP Access and click the radio button beside the access you want: NCSU, section, selected sections, course, selected individuals (with realm ID), and support staff (default).

The wrap directory is where you control access to materials. It is secured by the Web Realm Authentication Protocol (WRAP) developed at NCSU and Sentrisystems on Centennial Campus. A wrap directory is automatically created for all course sections but not for the course "common" area. The default setting is for instructor and support staff access only.

Only read access can be set in the wrap directory. What if I want individuals to write in the space?

Access to the wrap directory and all other directories automatically created by WolfWare cannot be changed except through the admin tools provided in the WolfWare Toolbox. However, subdirectories you create yourself in the www and www/wrap space can be controlled by standard AFS fs commands. Make a subdirectory, change the permissions, and put your files there, e.g.:

% cd /afs/eos.ncsu.edu/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/www/
% mkdir practice
% fs sa practice userid rlidwk (or use write instead of rlidwk)
% mv *.doc practice

How do I make it so that both of my sections can access one wrap folder and not have to put duplicate copies of documents in both section lockers?

Decide which section of the course you are going to use to hold the materials. Select WolfWare Toolbox at http://courses.ncsu.edu/, and log in to the Admin Tools page for that course and section. Select the Configure WRAP Access button, and on the web page that comes up, select the radio button beside "Open to everyone in this course" if there are only two sections, and you teach both of them. Or, select "Open to selected sections" and select the radio buttons of the specific sections that you wish to have access to the current section's wrap space at /afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/www/wrap/
(URL: http://courses.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/wrap/).

I have used the Admintool to link two of my sections to use the same homepage. However, when I look up the URL for a second section, I am not redirected to the first. How can I fix this?

You need to create an ".htaccess" file in the directory of the section that you want to redirect. On an AFS-aware machine, go to the section www directory. and edit the file .htaccess, adding these two lines:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^.*$ FILL_IN_TARGET_URL_HERE [R,L]

Once you save the file, you should be able to reload the section URL in your browser and be redirected to the other URL. If you get a Server Error instead, check to make sure you have copied the two lines correctly.

For example, if CSC506 has web pages under section 001 and a link for section 601 back to section 001, here is what you would do on a Unix machine:

% cd /afs/eos/courses/csc/csc506/lec/601/www
% nedit .htaccess

Insert the following two lines and save the file.

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^.*$ http://courses.ncsu.edu/csc506/lec/001/ [R,L]

Load the URL http://courses.ncsu.edu/csc506/lec/601/ in your browser to be sure the redirect works correctly.

Note that once you've added this .htaccess file, none of the other files that might be found in the section 601 www directory will be accessible. The rule added above redirects ALL requests in this subdirectory to the target URL.

Rolls

How do you handle special cases of people who are not registered by conventional means, or at all?

Via "Extras." The automatically generated class roll contains enrolled students only and is updated daily from Registration and Records data feeds. However, distance learners, audits, incompletes making up courses, etc., can be added to the roll by the instructor via WolfWare Toolbox -> Manage Extras List. These students must have Eos/Unity IDs to be added, however.

At http://courses.ncsu.edu/, select WolfWare Toolbox. Select the section and login with your Eos/Unity login and password. When you get to the Admin Tools page, select Manage Extras List. Add an "extra" by typing his/her user ID in the Add to Extras List field at the bottom of the page. If there is more than one to add, type in all the IDs with a space separating them and then select the Add to Extras button. Once added, extras have full student access, and you will see them on your class roll. To remove, select the check box by the name and Remove from Extras.

I teach a cross-listed CSC and ECE course and would like to use one class web, mail list, roll, etc., rather than two. How does WolfWare handle cross-listed courses?

At the request of the instructor to help@wolfware.ncsu.edu, the ECE students can be added automatically each morning as "extras" in the CSC class (or vice versa). This essentially makes them students of the CSC course. One class is made the "parent" of the other so they can share class mail, web space, etc. When you make your request for classes to be cross-listed, tell us which course and section should be the parent class, and which course(s) and section(s) should be the child(ren). You don't need to have wolfware lockers for any but the parent section.

Mail Lists

How do I get class mailing lists for my course and section(s)? Who can send and receive to them?

WolfWare automatically generates two mailing lists for each course and three mailing lists for each section. However, the instructor can only change the settings on one mail list--the main section mail list--through the WolfWare Toolbox -> Set Mailing List Access.

section support staff

Is it possible to send mail to ALL sections of a course at one time? Can a student do this?

If you teach ALL sections of a multi-section course and send email to xxxyyy@wolfware.ncsu.edu, all students and support staff in the sections will receive it. If you are not teaching all sections of a multi-section course, then only those sections you do teach will receive mail you and your support staff send to xxxyyy@wolfware.ncsu.edu.

Students cannot send mail to xxxyyy@wolfware.ncsu.edu. However they can send to the class mail address of the section they are in (xxxyyy-zzz@wolfware.ncsu.edu) if the instructor has set that access via WolfWare Toolbox -> Set Mailing List Access. The default setting for section mail is support staff only.

If a student sends mail to section support, xxxyyy-zzz-sup@wolfware.ncsu.edu, the mail goes to the support staff of that section only. However, if the student sends mail to course support, xxxyyy-sup@wolfware.ncsu.edu, then the mail goes to every section's support staff, that is, all support staffs for the course. See also mail send/receive table.

Students emailing the class (if enabled) cause mail to bounce back to them. How can this be fixed?

There is no place in WolfWare to fix or set mail addresses. WolfWare downloads mail addresses from the appropriate campus database, and they show up in the class roll inside WolfWare. This way, there is only one place on campus to get and update this information.

WolfWare supports only one mail address per student. It is the Eos/Unity address, your students should use that.

If they write from an address other than their recognized campus mail account, and you are willing to accomodate them, you will need to add this mail address via Wolfware Toolbox -> Set Mailing List Access under Additional Users so the mail server recognizes it as a valid mail address for sending and receiving mail to/from class. For example, if you want to send email from joestudent@hotmail.com, type joestudent in the Additional Users field. The hotmail.com should not be included.

I'm a faculty member (or support staff) and my mail is bouncing back. What am I doing wrong?

There is no place in WolfWare to fix or set mail addresses. WolfWare downloads mail addresses from the appropriate campus database.

Like students, staff and faculty can only have one mail address. But unlike students, they CAN have mail forwards and aliases. For example, if a faculty member has requested the mail alias, john_doe@ncsu.edu, he does not get an additional address and mailbox but an alias to the single mail account, usually the Eos/Unity address, userid@unity.ncsu.edu.

If you write from an address other than your recognized campus mail account, you will need to add this mail address via Wolfware Toolbox -> Set Mailing List Access under Additional Users so the mail server recognizes it as a valid mail address for sending and receiving mail to/from class. For example, if you want to send email from joeprof@hotmail.com, type joeprof in the Additional Users field. The hotmail.com should not be included.

I am an enrolled student (or support staff) in the class, but mail I send to the section mailing list bounces. Why?

The section mailing list is configured to allow only the support personnel to send mail to it. This is a configurable option, so your instructor has the ability to change the security settings in a variety of ways, including:

  • Open to support users (default). Only people listed as support for this section can send email to this list.
  • Open to everyone in the section. All students and support people in this section of this course can send/receive email to/from this list.
  • Open to all. Anyone in the world can send email to this list.

Contact your instructor about how s/he intends to use xxxyyy-zzz@wolfware.ncsu.edu class maiI.

If you are support staff writing from an address other than your recognized campus mail account, you will need to add this mail address via Wolfware Toolbox -> Set Mailing List Access under Additional Users so the mail server recognizes it as a valid mail address for sending and receiving mail to/from class. For example, if you want to send email from joeprof@hotmail.com, type joeprof in the Additional Users field. The hotmail.com should not be included..

I am teaching a cross-listed class. If I send an email to the class mailing list for one class, will the other class receive it as well, and vice versa?

Yes, but not vice versa. The class members of one class are made "extras" in the other class, so you should send mail to the mailing list of the "parent" class that includes these extras. For example, all students in ece576 are made "extras" in csc576 because the courses are cross-listed. Mail sent to csc576 will be received by both classes, but mail sent to ece576 will be received by that class only.

How do I use the section-based anonymous comments mail ?

On Aug 25th, 2004, WolfWare removed the anonymous comments email list alias:

crsnum-sec-comments@wolfware.ncsu.edu
e.g.,
csc114-001-comments@wolfware.ncsu.edu

and replaced it with a new web tool that has the following features:

  • web-based and WRAP-protected, so spammers cannot abuse the list
  • access limited to students enrolled in the section, or listed as extras
  • can be enabled or disabled by the instructor
  • if enabled, a link will appear on your course boilerplate page

If you want to allow your students to send you anonymous feedback, do the following:

  1. Go to the WolfWare admin tool: https://wolfware.ncsu.edu/wrap-bin/admintool
  2. Select your course-section and click on "Go!"
  3. Click on the Anonymous Feedback button in the Mailing List Management section of the main menu.
  4. Select the "enabled" setting and click on the Submit Feedback Setting button at the bottom of the form..

Within 15 minutes, a new "feedback" link will appear on your boilerplate page.

If you do not want to allow your students to send you anonymous feedback, you do not need to do anything. This tool is disabled by default.

Is it possible to have anonymous comments sent to the professor of the section alone and not default to the whole support list?

No. The only way for anonymous comments to go to the professor alone is if s/he is the only person on the support list. People on the support list have exactly the same access to the locker and tools as the instructor.

How anonymous are the anonymous comments?

Very secure. The program strips the header information off the mail as it's coming in and then re-transmits the email to the appropriate support section. For example, sending email to csc114-001-comments@wolfware.ncsu.edu would send the stripped email to csc114-001-sup@wolfware.ncsu.edu. The "stripping" that the program does on the message removes all traces of the previous headers. Important note! If a student includes a mail signature at the end of the message, it will appear. The process strips out message headers only. Students should be told to remove their signatures if they wish to remain anonymous.

Submit

How do I submit from campus labs? How do I submit from home?

WolfWare Submit only accepts files resident on your client, so if you are on campus and your file is in your AFS home directory (Eos/Unity account):

  1. Go to http://courses.ncsu.edu/, select your course and section, and select Submit Assignments.
  2. Select the Submit an Assignment button and the specific assignment you are submitting to.
  3. Browse to locate the file in your home directory's AFS space.
  4. Make sure the file is selected, and then File -> Upload File in your browser.

At home, to upload a file you created on your local machine, follow the same instructions above, except browse to locate the file on your home computer.

However, if you are home and the file you wish to submit is in your campus AFS file space, YOU MUST DOWNLOAD THE FILE TO YOUR HOME MACHINE BEFORE YOU CAN SUBMIT IT. For that you will need to use ftp (see Putting Content into the Course Locker).

  1. Open the local folder where you want to download the file.
  2. ftp to ftp.ncsu.edu and use your Eos/Unity login name and password to access your account file space.
  3. Select the fle and download it to the open folder on your computer.
  4. Go to http://courses.ncsu.edu/, select your course and section, and select Submit Assignments.
  5. Select the Submit an Assignment button and the specific assignment you are submitting to.
  6. Make sure the file is selected, and then File -> Upload File in your browser.

Submit will take a minute to make the transfer. When the transfer is complete, it will show you the name of the file you have uploaded and the size of the file.

Where are the files stored that students are submitting via WolfWare Submit?

/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/submitted/assignment/userid/file
(or lab instead of lec)

where
assignment is a subdirectory containing the assignment submissions
userid is a subdirectory for each student who has submitted
file is the student's assignment submission

e.g.,

/afs/eos/courses/csc/csc501/lec/001/submitted/hw2/jqpublic/paper.doc

where
hw2 is created to hold the hw2 assignment submissions
jqpublic is created when this student has submitted his assignment
paper.doc is jqpublic's hw2 assignment submission

How can I retrieve submitted homework files?

WolfWare does not yet have an interface in place for viewing/retrieving submitted files via a web browser. You have to log in to an AFS-capable machine and go to the directory where the files are stored. For example:

% cd /afs/eos/courses/csc/csc591e/lec/001/submitted/
% ls
HW1 HW2
% cd HW1
% ls
bjbyerly kwu mpleasa ranimbal ryerram ttdriver yxin bpmuthus lzhao poothon rlfair ske vullana ksubram

A subdirectory is created for each student who has submitted. The files are found in those subdirectories.

If you are on a Unix machine connected directly to AFS, you will be able to use the commands cd, ls, cp, mv, etc. to change directories, list, copy, move files, etc. If you are on NT or Mac machines connected to AFS, then you will work through your computer's file/directory system of folders and files, e.g., on campus Eos/Unity NT computers, select the J: drive, then move through the folders eos -> courses, etc.

However, if you are on a non-AFS machine at your home or office, you will need to use ftp (for help, see Putting Content into the Course Locker). The machine to ftp to is ftp.ncsu.edu. Log in with your Eos/Unity ID and password and cd into your section's submitted directory, /afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/submitted/assignment/. In each submitted/assignment/ directory, there is a subdirectory for each student (Unity ID) who has submitted. The students' assignment submissions are inside these directories. You should be able to use your ftp tool to get every subdirectory, and it should recreate the files in the same arrangement on your local machine.

You will need to explore the ftp tool you use and get assistance from the campus Help Desk (help@ncsu.edu) if you have problems with ftp.

Is there a file size limit on submitted files?

There is an 8MB limit per file.

.

How secure is Submit?

WolfWare Submit uses Secure Socket Layer (SSL) for secure transmission of student files into a secure file storage area. The Unix/AFS infrastructure also locks down permissions on directories, as does the campus-developed WRAP system (Web Realm Authentication Protocol). The computer security coordinator for campus is one of WolfWare's developers, so very close attention is paid to security. Please let us know if you suspect any security fallibility or breach (help@wolfware.ncsu.edu)

.

Can I work with submitted files, such as place remarks on the documents electronically and grade them?

You will need to move the files into other applications to mark and grade them. Online grading and grade-posting are planned for WolfWare but do not yet exist.

How long does it take for the submitted directories to be created after adding an assignment?

The directory is not added until the first submission is made by a student. Students should be able to submit to an assignment as soon as the assignment is added, assuming the start time allows it.

Once a student submits a file, is there any way for him/her to remove (delete) it?

Students cannot delete files. They can overwrite them. Each new upload is added to the list, or overwritten if the name of the file is the same.

Is any kind of verification given to students after they upload an assignment to Submit?

After students upload a file to Submit, they are returned to the page showing a listing of all the files they have uploaded, the date of the upload, and the size of the file as saved in the locker.

I want the students to submit files but without any time constraints. Can I do this?

You can make submit open for the entire semester. Via WolfWare Toolbox -> Submit Admin, set the Start and End times with the dates of the semester's beginning and end.

I need to give some students extensions and different due dates, e.g., user 1 has due date 1, user 2 has due date 2, and so on. Is it possible to do this?

Yes. Create an assignment with the same name. Set access for user1, and then set the deadline to whatever user1 needs. Repeat as needed for additional students. For example:

HW1, ends March 15 2000 8:00AM, ALL
HW1, ends March 16 2000 8:00AM, harrison
HW1, ends March 21 2000 8:00AM, tkl

harrison and tkl would see two options for HW1. Both would see the March 15 deadline, as would the rest of the class. In addition, harrison would see a March 16 deadline and tkl March 21. Both submit to the same directory.

I would like for a group of the class to submit an assignment rather than the whole class. Can I do this?

Yes. Select Submit Admin in the WolfWare Toolbox, select New Group under Group Name, and name the group in the Enter Group field, e.g., GROUPA (in uppercase). List the Eos/Unity usernames (see roll) in the People Included field, with a single space between usernames, and select the Add Group button. Then select the Assignment (check box) and Edit Assignment and change People Included to GROUPA. Only students in GROUPA will be able to submit for that assignment. Students submit INDIVIDUALLY and are only able to view whatever files they submit for themselves. They cannot view what others in the group have submitted.

Can I rename an assignment I set up for submission? I don't see any way to do this, although I can easily change dates, times, groups, etc.

Unfortunately no. This capability is more difficult to implement than it might appear. You will have to delete the assignment and start again if you want it to have another name.

I am enrolled but have not been able to access submit to turn in an assignment. What is the problem?

There could be different reasons for this. Since Submit is written to catch most common mistakes, first read and follow any suggestions you get in the error messages. If these do not work, try trouble-shooting the following:

  1. Submit is WRAP-protected. Make sure that your web browser is set to accept cookies, which has to be on for WRAP to work.
  2. Make sure your passwords on campus Unix and NT machines are synched at http://www.ncsu.edu/password/
  3. "Server Error" messages usually occur when something on the network interrupts the file-upload process. If you get this error, use the Back button on your browser to go back to the form and click on Upload File again. Try at least three times before reporting the problem.
  4. You cannot submit directories or folders. Submit accepts only file submission not whole directories. If you must submit multiple files, you will need to tar or zip the files into one file before submitting.
  5. There might be a quota problem if the submitted file takes the locker over its quota.

If the Submit problem persists, report it to help@wolfware.ncsu.edu. Include as much information as you can about what you are doing. Include

  • your realm ID
  • the class/section and assignment
  • error messages
  • the file name and size
  • the time/date of the attempt
  • what your network connection is (which ISP or NCSU lab)
  • the type of computer and browser you are using

Message Board

How do I link to the Message Board for my class?

When you set up a Message Board (Add Forum) for your class via Wolfware Toolbox -> Select Course -> Message Board Admin, a link will be created automatically on the boilerplate page for the class. (The class message board links to http://wolfware.ncsu.edu/wrap-bin/mesgboard/xxx:yyy::zzz:sem:year, e.g., http://wolfware.ncsu.edu/wrap-bin/mesgboard/st:370::005:1:2001, where xxx=dept prefix, yyy=course number, zzz=course section, sem=1 (spring), 6 (SSI), 7 (SSII), or 8 (fall), and year=4-digit year. Note the double colons between dept prefix and course number.)

If you want the link to appear sooner that the scheduled update, select Request Boilerplate Update. Also, under Wolfware Toolbox -> Select Course -> Edit WWW Boilerplate, you can choose to link class message boards together or change to another Message Board altogether.

Is there any way to consolidate message boards from multiple sections of the same course? I'd like to have a message board addressing questions about assignments that appears in the message board list of all course sections.

Yes. Select the Message Board Admin button in the WolfWare Toolbox and Add or Setup an existing forum. In the Post Users section, click on all the sections you wish to have active for this forum. Also, Edit WWW Boilerplate to link one Message Board to multiple sections.

Is there a way to delete or rename a message board forum once it has been created?

Yes. Go to WolfWare Toolbox -> MessageBoard Admin. To rename, select the forum you want to rename by clicking on the radio box next to that forum in the list. Next, select the Setup button below the list. This will give you the form to update the name, description, and permissions for that forum. To delete a forum, select the forum by checking its radio box and click on the Delete button to remove the forum from the list.

I understand that WolfWare only archives what is in the section www and www/wrap folders. How does one save MessageBoard discussions?

You will have to make copies and save any content that may be in the submitted directory or within Message Board. To keep forum discussions, use the Message Board admin tool to dump a copy of the messages to
an HTML file so that you can save the content in your own space or on external media.

Select the Message Board Admin. Choose the forum you wish to copy, and select the Export button to export all Topics into a clean HTML format.

Grade Book

What grade columns can I make and how do I create them?

The grade book comes with five default columns:

  • Exam Grade (optional) - You do not need to use this column, but it cannot be removed. Grade submissions to Registration and Records must have an Exam Grade column. The two zeroes in brackets [0/0] at the top of the column means that the date in it will not be used calculate the Final Grade.
  • Extra Credit (optional) - Allows you to adjust the Final Grade for individuals without changing the fomula for the Final Grade for everyone.
  • Current Average - Gives the average grade for columns with grades entered.
  • Final Average - Gives a running total regardless of empty columns. When all the columns have data in them, this and the Current Average will be the same, but until then, the Final Average will be lower.
  • Final Letter - Gives the Final Grade as a letter grade. By default, the letter grades displayed are based on the suggested letter grading for NCSU. The assigned letter grades can be altered if you are using a different letter grade system.

You can also create custom columns for additional grades. To add a column, select the New Column button. Specify the following properties:

  • Name - Name of assignment or graded item, e.g, Test 1
  • Location - Where to insert the new column
  • Type - Numeric, Text , or Formula. Choose Numeric if you want to use this column for normal grade entries. Choose Text if you want to use it for a letter grade or comments. Choose Formula if you want to use it to calculate a total or average.
  • Hidden from Students - Check the checkbox, or leave unchecked. By default, students will be able to see any data you enter into the column unless you hide it by checking the check box.
  • Weight - Weight of grade, specified by decinal notation, e.g., 5% would be entered as .05.
  • Scale - Insert 1 if you are using an 100 point scale. If you are using any other scale, enter the number that when multiplied by the maximum points on the scale will produce a product of 100. For example, if a maximum score for a grade is 50 points, enter 2 (50 x 2 = 100). If the maximum score is 25 points, enter 4 (25 x 4 = 100).
  • Max Score - Maximum number of points for the assignment (see Scale above)
  • Formula - Provide formula if you have selected it as the column's data Type (see above). Paste in a spreadsheet formula.
  • Comment Column - Check the checkbox, or leave unchecked. If checked, a text column will be created so you can insert comments to students.

To enter grades into the column, select the pencil icon at the top of the column. To enter grades by student, select the pencil icon by the student's name.

What do the icons mean in the column heads and rows?

There are three icons at the top of each column:

  • checkbox - set column properties, e.g., column weight, data type
  • pencil - opens column cells so data can be entered
  • bar chart - shows column data statistics

Rows have two icons:

  • glasses - view grades exactly as students would
  • pencil - opens up data cells so you can enter grades by student instead of by assignment

How do I move or delete columns within the grade book?

Select the icon that looks like a checkbox in the column heading to get to the column Preferences. You will be able to specify column location as well as delete a column.

How do I change the +/- boundaries for the Final Letter grade column?

Select the Preferences button at the top and choose whether you want plus/minus grading or not and set the values.

Is there an easy way to take grades from WebAssign and enter them into a Wolfware gradebook without retyping them?

There is no direct connection to WebAssign, but you can upload a two-column Excel spreadsheet in the following format to your gradebook:

unity-id column-name *there must be this header row
id1 grade1
id2 grade2
... ...

It will prompt you for whether to make a new column or put the grades in an existing column. It will match the grades to the Unity ids, so if you don't have them all, it will only write grades for the ones you give it.

How do I make the grades viewable by students from my course page at courses.ncsu.edu?

The grades will be accessible by students unless you select the checkbox Hidden from Students for the assignment in Column Properties. Students only see their own grades, not the grades of others in the class.

PREP Lockers

What is a PREP locker and how do I request one?

A PREP locker is locker file space allocated to the instructor for preparing course materials in advance of the semester when the course will be taught. They are listed at http://prep.wolfware.ncsu.edu/.

If you need a PREP locker for a course, go to http://wolfware.ncsu.edu/ and select the link, Add a Course to WolfWare. If the request is for a semester other than the current one, a prep locker is automatically set up for you. It resides as a folder within the course locker (see below). When the locker is created, you will receive email telling you how to access the space.

Where is the PREP locker and when does a PREP locker move to current course space?

If you need a locker to prepare for a class for an upcoming semester, request a locker for the course by going to http://wolfware.ncsu.edu/ and selecting the link, Add a Course to WolfWare. If the request is for a course in a future semester, then a prep locker is automatically created at /afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/prep/xxxyyy_zzz#year/, e.g., /afs/eos/courses/csc/csc116/prep/csc116_00182002/. where

xxx=dept prefix
yyy=course number
zzz=section number
#=number of semester, 1, 6, 7, or 8 (1 for January, Spring semester; 6 for June, Summer Session I; 7 for July, Summer Session II; 8 for August, Fall semester)
year=four-digit year

When the semester rolls (the first Monday after a semester ends), the prep course will move automatically to live space at /afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/lec/zzz/www/, e.g., /afs/eos/courses/csc/csc116/lec/001/www/

If you already have content for this course archived, you can select Restore Parked Locker from AdminTools to copy all your web files from the archived locker to the prep locker.

You can view the content in the prep space with the URL:

http://prep.wolfware.ncsu.edu/xxxyyy_zzz#year/
e.g.,
http://prep.wolfware.ncsu.edu/csc116_00182002/

PARK Lockers

What is a PARK Locker?

A PARK locker is the archive of a WolfWare course that has been taught. Currently, all WolfWare courses are moved automatically into archive lockers and held for two years (see also, Location of Archived Courses). These policies can change, so please stay informed about the archiving of lockers. Also, always retain copies of important files in other locations and media.

With our current model, archived (old) course lockers are not set up to be available on the web, nor are they accessible in such a way to be worked on (although the instructor has read access to the files). If you need to work on an archived course in advance of the semester in which it will be taught again, go to http://wolfware.ncsu.edu/ and select the link, Add a Course to WolfWare and request a PREP locker for the course or a NEW locker. When it is created at http://prep.wolfware.ncsu.edu/ or http://courses.ncsu.edu/ you can use the Restore Parked Locker on the AdminTools page to copy all your web files from the archived locker to the course prep space. When the course is once again current in TRACS, the "prep" locker will automatically move to "live space" in WolfWare at http://courses.ncsu.edu/.

Only the content in the www directory/folder (including all folders created under www, e.g., the wrap folder) is archived. If you want to keep submitted assignments or message board discussions, you will need to make copies of those yourself.

Where is the PARK locker, when does a current locker move to archive space, and how long is it archived?

If a course is flagged to be PARKed, it will be taken offline at the end of the semester (on "rollover" day, generally the first Monday after the semester ends). All of the AFS permissions will be changed to allow the course owner read-only access, and the volume will be remounted in the course locker's archived directory, /afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/archived/, e.g., /afs/eos/courses/csc/csc116/archived/. The archived directory contains previous semester courses in subdirectories (folders). These subdirectories are named and organized by course, section, semester, and year the course was taught:

/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/archived/xxxyyy_zzz#year
e.g.,
/afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/archived/
csc116_00182000, where

xxx=dept prefix
yyy=course number
zzz=section number
#=number of semester, 1, 6, 7, or 8 (1 for January, Spring semester; 6 for June, Summer Session I; 7 for July, Summer Session II; 8 for August, Fall semester)
year=four-digit year

The instructor selects the Restore Parked Locker function on the WolfWare Toolbox's Main Menu to copy the www directory back from a parked volume to a current course. At this time, the PARK flag is ignored. All courses are parked for two years regardless of the flag.

The read-only archive is not available via the web; you can only access it through the file system. If you have AFS access on your computer, you can get to the archive via the path (cd /afs/eos/courses/xxx/xxxyyy/archived/ or J: -> eos -> courses... (the J: drive is the /afs root on Windows), or access it through ftp.

If you leave content in the course locker's common/www directory, that data is retained from semester to semester. However, anyone who can administer a section of the course is free to modify or delete things in the common volume, and it is not archived at the end of the semester.
